Epigraphy is a subject of textual research on inscriptions on stone objects. It is the predecessor of modern archaeology in China and has an important influence on archaeology. The study of inscriptions on epigraphy began in the Spring and Autumn Period.Over the next thousand years, there have been many works on inscriptions on epigraphy and ancient inscriptions. However,it was not until the Northern Song Dynasty that epigraphy really became an independent subject of studying ancient inscriptions. The development of epigraphy has gone through five stages: embryonic stage(Spring and Autumn to Five Dynasties),development stage(Song Dynasty),decline stage(Yuan and Ming Dynasty),revival to prosperity stage(middle and modern Qing Dynasty),and integration stage with modern archaeology.Among these five stages, the Song and Yuan Dynasties are the key period for the final formation of epigraphy and play an important role in the development of epigraphy. The study of epigraphy mainly faces two aspects: one is the textual research and verification of ancient characters;the other is the study of the calligraphic value of written materials.Looking at the overall context of the development of epigraphy,we can find that in the historical period when epigraphy is more prosperous, the style of retro-classical calligraphy will be more popular, mainly manifested in seal scripts and official scripts. And so on.The literati politics in the Song Dynasty laid the foundation for the development of epigraphy, and at the same time brought a trend of retro-classical calligraphy. The literati and refined scholars in the society were full of interest in the ancient characters such as seal scripts, and formed a "custom of seal scripts".Some calligraphers such as Xu Xun,Zhang Youzhi,Dang Huaiying and Huang Tingjian appeared.A large number of excellent works have been produced. However, compared with another peak period of epigraphy, the achievements of seal scripts of calligraphers in Song Dynasty were not high, which was determined by the "freehand" style of literary creation in Song Dynasty.Literators in Song Dynastypursued more elegant and light artistic conception, but less rigorous and rigid atmosphere. Therefore, although seal scripts in Song Dynasty were highly respected, seal scripts in Song Dynasty were highly praised.Book development actually does not fit in with the social environment. The development of seal books also promoted the prosperity of seal carving.Seals and coins in the Song and Yuan Dynasties adopted the style of seal books.Seals play a special role in the social life of the country.Through reading a lot of epigraphy literature and evaluating many handed down calligraphy works of Song and Yuan dynasties, this paper finally concludes the influence of epigraphy on the development of calligraphy.First of all,the development of epigraphy will lead to the trend of revival in the creation of calligraphy, which is directly reflected in the re-popularity of ancient fonts such as seal scripts and official scripts, contributing to the inheritance of ancient scripts.Secondly, there are a lot of rubbings in various works of epigraphy, which is a true record of ancient written materials and provides convenience for future generations. Finally, the influence of epigraphy on the style of calligraphy should be in line with the whole social environment,so that the art of calligraphy can be truly developed.
