As we all know, dancers of Guangchangwu are a more inclusive dance group.I was curious about a dance phenomenon. There are no dancers of Guangchangwu participating in ballet. It rises a question:why ballet not become part of Guangchangwu? The present research focuses on the question 'Why did not ballet become square dance?'.The aim of the research is to reveal features of square dance. This research was conducted within a qualitative paradigm.Post-positivism research grounded and so forth have been utilised as the theoretical framework. The differences between ballet and Guangchangwu have been discussed from four perspectives, such as concept, space, dance places and dance technology. The research has found that square dance is the product of social and cultural development. It is not the result of the dance evolution.Square dance is a new type of dance, but it only 'brought' dance movements from professional dance rather than dance inheritance. That means we cannot regard square dance based on the classification of professional dance, and the concept of square dance is fluid and open.Secondly, the mass and elite cultures represented by square dance and ballet are developed in accordance with their own laws and features.Professional dancers cannot view professional dance as a more advanced dance overlooking mass dance.Third, square dance could be researched within a wide dance concept. The researcher could focus on the relation among square dance and Chinese social culture and history, also square dance and contemporary life.
