The concept of karma has been a widespread Chinese folk culture since ancient times. Also,it is one of the important ideas of Chinese folk faith, which has a subtle effect on people's daily lives. In Chinese culture, the faith of karma not only emphasizes the karma of people who behave in a good or bad way themselves, but also the karma of the family members involved.Researches focusing on the concept of Chinese traditional karma are mostly discussed from the perspective of religion,or its influence and significance. However, few studies have explored this Chinese traditional concept from the field of psychology despite discussion of it is helpful to the understanding of folk faiths and the inheritance and development of traditional culture. In order to explore Chinese people's perception of the concept of karma passing between generations(intergenerational karma),the current thesis separated the good deed and the bad deed in four studies with different scenarios and introduced the variable of cognitive load to explore the faith of karma passing between generations.Study 1 explored college students' perception of different types of intergenerational karma concepts in Chinese culture.30 college students participated in study 1.The result of the paired-sample t-test shows that compared with the idea that people behave badly and their offsprings suffer, college students tend to believe that the people behave well and their offsprings are blessed.Study 2 explored college students' perception of different types of intergenerational karma concepts by setting up story scenes that are closely related to daily life.35 college students participated in study 2.The result of the paired-sample t-test shows that compared with the idea that people behave badly and their offsprings suffer, college students tend to believe that people behave well and their offsprings are blessed in the context of the story scenarios.Study 3 introduced the variable of cognitive load based on study 2,to improve external validity and explore the effect of the cognitive load and the type of karma on college students' perception of intergenerational karma concepts based on dual processing model theory.60 college students participated in study 3.The result of the repeated measures analysis of variance shows that college students tend to believe in the idea that people behave well and their offsprings are blessed. However,we did not find evidence of the effect of cognitive load on college students' perception of intergenerational karma concepts.Study 4 further set recruitment scenarios to improve external validity and explore the impact of the cognitive load and the type of karma on recruitment decisions of college students.68 college students participated in study 4.The result of the repeated measures analysis of variance shows that no effect of cognitive load on the recruitment decision of college students has been found in the condition of behaving well. While cognitive load has a significant impact on recruitment decisions in the condition of behaving badly. In other words, college students are less likely to expect the character to have a successful application under high cognitive load than under low cognitive load in this condition. It also shows that whether under high cognitive load or low cognitive load, the type of karma has a significant effect on the perception of the intergenerational karma concept.College students under both type conditions more expect the character to have a successful application in the condition of behaving well than behaving badly. The current thesis explored the perception of the traditional Chinese folk faith of karma from the perspective of intergenerational transmission. It was found that college students believe that the good deeds of elders will benefit their descendants, whicih shows students' identification of faith of karma characterized by intergenerational transmission to a certain extent. Also, college students' perception of the intergenerational karma concept and their recruitment decision reflects different characteristics in different types and scenarios, and under different cognitive loads.
