Since the 20 th century,the western contemporary art has experienced significant changes.With the advent of the media information age,expressions of art become diverse.Painting has even been declared dead and has lost its mainstream status until artists in the contemporary painting field reinterpret painting.The painting returns with a strong momentum after being given the connotation of the times.This essay takes the case of Luc Tuymans who is a famous contemporary Belgian artist as an example,exploring his artistic developing career and the metaphors used in his works to transmit spirits from the perspective of contemporary figurative painting.The essay is divided into three parts.The first part introduces the impact of the time he in on his creation and the his personal life experience.In the second part,mainly from the perspective of Tuymans' s choice for materials and his application,the expressing ways of visual media with images as a represent in the artist's creation and its influence on the construction of works in the new media age are discussed.The third part discusses visual transmission with metaphors in Tuymans' s works from metaphor.s' perspective.In the context of contemporary society,the term metaphor is not restricted to a single rhetorical scope any more,which becomes a cognitive way of human thinking and a special cognitive phenomenon.This essay attempts to explore the ways Tuymans uses to convey and express through visual metaphors,accordingly,a deep analysis of his works' spiritual connotation can be made.
