This thesis systematically investigates the characters design of Mongolian famous writer Edunsambu's novels. The thesis consists of four parts: introduction, five analysis chapters, conclusion and appendix. The introduction includes the rational, research objects,a review of previous studies, research purposes, implication and methodology.Chapter one investigates the writing trajectory of Edunsambu, and holds that the author has gone through two different stages in his writing process, these are the lyric writing stage in 1980-1999 and plot-dominant novel writing stage in 2000-2018.And these different stages including six different periods, themes and six different types of images, such as accusatory literature and the victim image, the introspective literature and the tragic image, the reform literature and the reformist image, the local literature and the local image and so on;In the second chapter, first of all, statistical methods are used to classify the characters of Edunsambu`s novels by age,sex and occupation, based on the above classification, the chapter creates a system of characters which includes the image of men who represent the depravity of nation, the image of young women who embody traditional personality, the image of the old people who carry the traditional culture. The characterization creates images that are close-to-life and with distinct personality. It also explores the inner world of the characters and the complexity of humen beings. The third and fourth chapters examine the dimension of gender in Edunsambu's novels. The third chapter focuses on the female images in Edunsambu's novels, and finds that the female images can be basically classified into three categories, such as the generous and benevolent saint, the young woman with a bitter and tearful life, and the pure and innocent goddess. Then it analyzes the ideographic function of the female image, and views that the female image roughly displays three kinds of meaning functions: great love and selflessness--the mother, the interest-oriented society--"oppressor","The representative of new consciousness"--"new woman".The fourth chapter focuses on the male characters in Edunsambu's novels. It is believed that the three main types of male images are the old man who guards the culture, the sick son who changes the world, and the radiant grandson. Then it summarizes the ideogram function of male image, and argues that male characters mainly serve three kinds of symbolic meaning, such as the cohesion of the spirit of Qiyan--hero,the degeneration of the national spirit--scum,and the unstable character. The overall male image represents the cultural transmission and inheritance, the cultural depravity and the futuristic hope. The fifth chapter examines the aesthetic dimension of the images in Edunsambu's novels. The author often uses clean, simple and bright characterization to represent the plain, ordinary and glorious beauty of the grassland people. And through such character he reveals the weakness and illness of national culture, and at the same time these weakness carries certain decadent refined beauty. In addition, the characters are attributed with a certain degree of symbolic beauty. The conclusion summarizes the whole thesis, and points out that Edunsambu has developed his own unique series of characters in Mongolian contemporary novels, and formed a steady aesthetic style.
