The Motivation And Mechanism Of Lexicalization Of Negative Three-syllable Words

The research object of this paper is negative trisyllabic words,which evolve from phrases,with negative adverbs such as “no”,and “non” in the forms.Negative trisyllabic words are words or structures that are or have been lexicalized or grammaticalized.Based on the corpus,the paper elaborates negative trisyllabic words from the perspectives of synchronic syntactic environment,diachronic word-formation and notional word grammaticalization.It analyzes the causes and mechanisms of the evolution,and discusses the core semantics of negative trisyllabic words after grammaticalization and their resulting pragmatic functions.This paper is divided into three parts.The first part is the introduction of Chapter One,which introduces the research subject,and reviews related research on lexicalized and grammaticalized theories and negative trisyllabic words in a comprehensive way.And then the research methods and corpus sources of this paper are explained respectively.The second part is the main body part,which includes Chapters Two,Chapter Three and Chapter Four.Chapter Two first makes a definition of negative trisyllabic words,and then focuses on the core semantics after grammaticalization and pragmatic functions,and finally concludes four functional category,“speculation”,“evaluation”,“anti-expectation” and “suggestion”.The usage and characteristics of several homomorphic structures of typical words in each category are analyzed.In this way,it comes to a conclusion that the inner development of negative trisyllabic words is imbalanced,because it is characterized with multiple forms and properties.Chapter Three reviews the process of the formation and grammaticalization of negative trisyllabic words from the diachronic perspective,and explores the historical origins and developing trends of typical words in each category.Each word has a different degree of grammaticalization,and the degree of lexicalization and notional word grammaticalization are reflected in the final forms.In addition,this chapter clarifies the origin of core semantics of some typical words in each category after grammaticalized.Chapter Four analyzes the causes and formation mechanisms of negative trisyllabic words evolution in detail.Semantic and syntactic conditions are important causes in the evolution.And Metaphors,conceptual superpositions,and analogies are mechanisms for lexicalization.In addition,subjectification and re-analysis are important mechanisms for the grammaticalization of notional word.The third part is conclusion in Chapter Five,which reviews the content and summarize the viewpoints,and point out the shortcomings of the paper so as to figure out the direction of future research.
