Is The Ugly Review Possible

In recent years,more and more scholars have researched on Kant's ugliness and produced a series of disputes.In this context,this paper focuses on Paul guyer's Kant on the purity of ugliness to explore the possibility and historical impact of "Ugliness" in Kant's aesthetic system.Guyer uses Kant's theory of appreciation judgment to explain the judgment of ugliness.From the perspective of pure appreciation judgment,he cancels the possibility of pure judgment of ugliness.He thinks that the experience of judging ugliness is a mixture of physiological,practical or moral judgment.The basis is that the pure aesthetic response of the object must be a kind of aesthetic pleasure in the free game state.Based on Guyer's answer to Kant's question of judging ugliness,this paper traces back to three aesthetic works,observation of aesthetic feeling and sublime feeling,Practical Anthropology and critique of judgment,to explore the possibility of judging ugliness:In the observation of aesthetic feeling and sublime feeling,through Kant's comparative analysis of sublime feeling and aesthetic feeling,it is found that the sublime feeling of fear is closer to the connotation of "ugly feeling ",which is an application of " judging ugliness " in the experience world;In Practical Anthropology,Kant actively defended sensibility,and thought that beauty and ugliness have "trivalent theory " : there exists a neutral state between " beauty " and " ugliness " as a transitional form,which endows " ugliness " with a one-way path of " beauty ";In Critique of Judgment,Kant did not give "Ugliness" and "Beauty" the same pure aesthetic and "beauty" based on the characteristics and innate conditions of free play,but introduced "ugliness" into art and became a form of artistic expression of beauty.Based on the distinction between "pure" judging ugliness and "applying" judging ugliness,this paper holds that the judgment of "judging ugliness" in Kant's aesthetic system is not pure,and it is application of "judging ugliness" judgment mixed with many factors,that is,physiological pleasure and unhappiness or moral prudence or evil.At the same time,this paper explores the influence of the theory of judging ugliness on western judging ugliness.On the one hand,Guyer has guided us in the direction,prompting more researchers to gradually realize the importance of "judging ugliness" in the history of aesthetics.But its theory still has the limitation,Guyer's way of making Kant's obscure esthetics thought clear also caused other scholars to criticize;On the other hand,Kant's examination of ugliness is a theoretical support for literature and art after the 19 th century,which embodies the contradiction between sensibility and reason.Kant uses "sublime" to reconcile beauty and ugliness conflict,leaving a possibility of applying judging ugliness.In conclusion,this paper based on Paul Guyer's active exploration of Kant's examination of ugliness,to understand,interpret and criticize it.And try to find the theoretical basis of "how it is possible to judge ugliness" in Kant's early critical aesthetic thought,and seek a theoretical reflection to reconcile beauty and ugliness in Critique of Judgment.This has played a great role in further enriching the theory of "judging ugliness" and Kant's theory of appreciation and judgment.
