| Mogao Grottoes 420 is one of the most representative grottoes in the Sui Dynasty of Dunhuang.At the top of the grottoes,we found a large-scale,exquisite and well preserved Sutra Paintings of Lotus Sutra,and the contents of Nirvana Sutra were mixed.The west wall of the grottoes has the Vimalakirti Sutra.The Sutra Paintings of Lotus Sutra and Vimalakirti Sutra appeared in Mogao Grottoes as early as Sui Dynasty.Among the many grottoes of Sui Dynasty,the murals of 420 grottoes are better than others of the same era in terms of age,scale and exquisite degree,which is worth studying.In addition,the forms and statues of the 420 Grottoes also embody the characteristics of the Sui Dynasty,which can be discussed.In the chapter one,the form and content of the 420 Grottoes will be introduced.The chapter two,through the comparison with the representative grottoes of the Northern Dynasties and Tang Dynasty,I can summarize the characteristics of the 420 Grottoes in modeling and regulation.The third chapter will analyze the frescoes on the top of the 420 Grottoes and the west wall.About the top of the grottoes,I will focus on the relationship and fate between the Lotus Sutra and the Nirvana Sutra.Meanwhile,I will mainly discuss the emergence and background of the Sutra Paintings of Vimalakirti Sutra on the west wall.The fourth chapter summarizes the artistic characteristics,thoughts and influences of the 420 grottoes.The last part is the summary of this paper.The purpose of this paper is to study the characteristics of 420 Grottoes’ art and its temper of times,which connect the past and the future,and to deduce the reasons of these characteristics in the light of the Buddhist thought and historical background of Sui Dynasty.Thinking about the ideological and cultural situation of Sui Dynasty and its influence on the art of Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang,incidentally,discusses the relationship between art and society. |
