There is a controversy whether the written text content and contextual information such as author, title, creative background, and pen characteristics will affect the aesthetic experience and judgment of calligraphy. From the perspective of aesthetic psychology, this study takes the writing content of calligraphy as the research object, and explores the influence of writing content and contextual information on the aesthetics of calligraphy with experiments.Study 1 explored whether the text content of different emotion types and different arousal levels had an impact on the participants'aesthetic judgments when appreciating calligraphy works.A total of 47 participants(20 males and 27 females)were recruited. The experiment was designed as a two-factor experiment. The results showed that the main effect of emotion type on liking score was significant(F(1,46)=15.628 p<.001,(?)_p~2=.254),and the main effect of arousal degree on liking was also significant(F(2,92)=3.390,p=.038,(?)_p~2=.069).The research results show that calligraphy works with positive content are more delightful but not necessarily more aesthetic. While calligraphy works with a high degree of arousal are more delightful as well as more aesthetic.Study 2 aims to explore whether legibility affects the aesthetic judgment when appreciating calligraphy.A total of 37 participants(12 males and 25 females)were recruited. The experiment was designed as a single factor experimental. The results showed that the readable level significantly affected participants'understanding(F(2,72)=105.284,p<.001,(?)_p~2=.745)and aesthetic(F(2,72)=31.740,p<.001,(?)_p~2=.469)of calligraphy works. The research results show that the calligraphy works whose text can be recognized will be considered more beautiful;the works whose overall meaning can be understood will be considered more beautiful based on the recognized text;the recognition text will have a greater impact on aesthetic judgment than the reading the meaning.Study 3 explored whether contextual information of calligraphy works can promote people's understanding of the content of calligraphy works and affect their aesthetic judgement. And whether there is a difference in the effect of contextual information on aesthetic of different styles of calligraphy.A total of 90 participants(40males and 50 females)were recruited. The experiment was designed as two-factor mixed experimental design. The results show that contextual information has a significant effect on participants'appreciation of calligraphy works(F(1,87)=5.908,p=.004,(?)_p~2=.120).The effect on the cursive script(F(2,87)=2.759,p=.069,(?)_p~2=.060)is greater than running script(F(2,87)=5.619,p=.005,(?)_p~2=.114).The research results show that works that provide rich contextual information will be considered more beautiful, and the role of contextual information in promoting aesthetics will be more significant in cursive script.
