The Soviet-Afghan war is one of the most significant conflict during the late period of the cold war.The nine years period military operation on purpose to secure a "soviet union friendly" government and the safety of the southern boarder of the Soviet Union which conduct by Soviet Union was a costly yet fruitless effort.it not only cause heavy loss of life and property, left afghan in ruins, but also left grave threat to the safety of the middle Asia,Russia even the globe.Except the consequence of the war, there is a fact which makes many people think and argue: Why Soviet union, one of the most powerful military power of that time suffer such defeat on its doorstep. There were many research has already discuss the Soviet-Afghan war. But,most of them didn't analyzed the reason of soviet union's failure specifically. For this reason the author want to get a systematized, all around conclusion through analyse and research in this thesis.Based on analyse and research to the background, decision making process of the Soviet Union and other elements important to this war, author's conclusion is both objective(the unfriendly terrian of Afghan,People`s Democratic Party of Afghanistan's policy make them unwelcome among the people,Afghan's tradition of resistance, the reaction of America,Iran and other countries.)and subjective cause(soviet's inefficient "invest" of resource, the flaw in decision making system,decision-supporting system and the logic behind those decisions)play their part in the soviet failure in afghan. And the "subjective" elements play a especially important role on soviet union's failure in afghan. The flaw in the decision-making system is the direct cause, the logic direct the policy making, such as ultra concern on national security, the influence of chauvinism and the "Ideology First" stereotypes of decision etc were the root cause which produce such wrong decision.
