The national security policy of Australia which was dominated by Britain had to be changed in the Second World War.Australia had to seek help from the American and tried to establish and develop diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union as the Japanese fascist intended to invade the country. The cooperative relationship between Australia and the Soviet Union was once continued after the Second World War.But the Australian had to make a choice between America and the Soviet Union as the coming of the Cold War.The national security policy of Australia had finished the transition process from 'mother country system' to 'brother system' in this period.Australia tried hard to promote its relationship with America to seek for its protection after Menzies came to power. Finally, the Australia-US alliance was built and Australia began to carry out its anti-Soviet policy.During this time,Australia joined the Korean war and Vietnam war actively and pushed a series of polices to restrict the communist movement in the country. To achieve the purpose of anti-Soviet Union,Menzies scheme the Petrov Conspiracy which resulted in the break off the relationship between the two countries.Australia withdrew the troops from Vietnam and reflected its policy after Whitlam came to power.Whitlam pushed his pragmatic foreign policy and sought for a relatively independent diplomatic policy. He tried to recover the relationship and visited the Soviet Union during his term of office which brought Australia a series of cooperation agreement with the Soviet Union. But in 1979,Australia pushed out its counter-measures including economic sanctions and cultural communication interruption after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which induced the falling of the relationship between the two countries. But the policy of Australia became more flexible and realistic at this time.
