In mathematics teaching and learning,proof has been used as a tool for training students' logical reasoning and thinking skills for a long time.Grade 8 students have just transitioned from reasoning to geometry proof,so the teaching of geometric proof is particularly important at this time.The Van Hiele Theory is about the level of student's geometric thinking and it is one of the most influential theory in the study of geometric learning.The level of geometric thinking and the stage of geometry teaching in the theory have practical significance for the geometric proof teaching.First,based on the literature review,this paper uses the test method to obtain the Grade 8 students' geometrical thinking level,and chooses the class of taking the teaching practice and the control class.Second,this paper uses a survey method to obtain students' geometry proof learning circumstances.Third,based on the result of surveys,the author conducts geometric proof teaching practice for students based on the five phases of “Information,Guided Orientation,Explication,Free Orientation,and Integration” in the stage of Van Hiele geometry teaching.Forth,after the teaching practice,the author did a comparative study between the class of taking the teaching practice and the control class by conducting a students' post-test of the geometrical thinking level and a geometrical proficiency test to prove whether the pedagogy based on the the Van Hiele geometry teaching stage can effectively guide the geometric proof teaching.Finally,the author did a correlative analysis between the students' geometrical thinking level obtained from the post-testing and the scores of geometrical proof test.In addition,the author gave improved suggestions in the teaching practice above by analyzing and generalizing the students' problems in the geometrical proof test.The results of the study are listed as follows:(1)The level of the geometrical thinking of Grade 8 students when they are just getting started in geometry proof is as follows: 10.9% reach Level 1-Visualization,39.9% reach Level 2 – Analysis,42.8% reach Level 3—Informal Deduction,only 4.3% reach Level 4—Formal Deduction.(2)Geometry proof teaching based on the Van Hiele geometry teaching stage can effectively guide the teaching practice;(3)There is a positive correlation between the students' geometric thinking level and the geometrical proof score.
