Adaptive problems in middle-to-high school transition refer to the phenomenon that most students find it difficult to adapt academically and socially when transitioning from middle school to high school.As an integral part of school education,transition education plays an indispensable role among all educational activities.In the past two decades,a bulk of research has emerged with insightful findings on transition education,especially in recent years with the dawning of a new epoch for transition research.However,most such research was devoted to the transition between subjects or that from kindergarten to primary school,with a lot less attention directed towards middle-to-high school transition education.The present study took X high school as the case on which survey and statistical analysis were conducted on the individual and family background,learning attitude,interpersonal skills,rational thinking and change of mentality of the students.This study combined literature study,survey,in-depth interview and case analysis in order to find particular features of different adaptive problems shown by the students.It was found that the adaptive problems mainly manifest themselves in environment,interpersonal,psychological and learning.Through analysis,the maladaptation mainly stems from the rapid transition in high-school teaching content,teenagers' immature self-perception and the lack of effective communication within students' family.After considering students' current situation in middle-to-high school transition and analyzing the several adaptive problems in a detailed fashion,feasible suggestions are put forward as follows on individual,teachers,teaching models,families,schools and societylevel:to focus on students' personality development and mental health education,to improve the quality of school education and promote positive classroom culture,to enhance parent-child interaction and strengthen social support systems.Thus,teachers and students could use scientific ways to guide them through this critical period,so that the students could better adjust mentally;improve their ways of learning and the ability to learn,thereby alleviating the adaptive problems and transitioning smoothly from middle to high school study.
