The strategy of "mass entrepreneurship and innovation",together with a series of policy documents, has improved the entrepreneurial environment.Data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor show that 66.4 percent of Chinese citizens recognize entrepreneurship as an important means of employment, and an entrepreneurial culture has gradually formed. The rapid growth in the number of start-ups and the continuous improvement in the number and quality of various start-up service institutions, like business incubators and science parks, have reduced the high risk of entrepreneurship to some extent. However, most start-ups are still unable to avoid the fate of failure, and the high failure rate is still an important problem in the field of entrepreneurship. From the perspective of entrepreneurial ability, product innovation competence, network competence and market competence are important factors that affect the success or failure of entrepreneurship. The lack of competence is often an important reason that leads to the failure of entrepreneurial enterprises in the growth period. In this paper, literature analysis method is adopted to sort out the research status at home and abroad, define the core concepts of this paper, and put forward the conceptual model. Then,Chinese entrepreneurial enterprises in the GEM database are selected as the research object, and the Probit model and QCA method are used for analysis. This paper mainly studies the following two parts:(1)the influence of internal and external competence and network competence on entrepreneurial failure;(2)the combined effect of internal and external competence and network competence on entrepreneurial failure. The results show that:(1)lack of entrepreneurial competence is an important cause of entrepreneurial failure;(2)the lack of a single competence is not enough to cause entrepreneurial failure.Entrepreneurial failure is often the result of a combination of several specific competence.Several configurations of these competence is provided;(3)the reasons for entrepreneurial failure vary from industry to industry. This study provides an explanation of entrepreneurial failure in the context of China from the perspective of entrepreneurial ability, and to a certain extent enriches the theories of entrepreneurial competence and studies related to entrepreneurial failure. This study summarizes the configurations that lead to entrepreneurial failure in different industries, provides more targeted references for enterprises and governments, and suggests that entrepreneurs should pay attention to the cultivation of competence to prevent the combined destruction.
