If the quality is strong, the country must be strong.Quality plays a major role in the rise of the great powers.High-quality promotion has become an important guide for the future export of China's manufacturing enterprises and it is also a "lubricant" that effectively deals with trade friction.Along with the increasing scale of China's enterprises embedded in the global value chain, the behavior of enterprises embedded in the global value chain is conducive to the improvement of export quality, but the export quality of Chinese enterprises has not shown a significant overall improvement trend and the improvement of China's overall quality level also lags behind the growth of economic scale. What is the real cause of the above export quality paradox?Explaining the current export quality of micro-manufacturing enterprises in China from the perspective of enterprise-level global value chain embeddedness has become the focus of this paper. In theoretical part, through the further expansion of the original quality endogenous decision model, introducing the global value chain embeddedness indicators into the original model through the existing utility mechanism between enterprise productivity and global value chain embeddedness, and the global value chain embeddedness and export quality are placed under the same research framework, focusing on the specific impact mechanism of enterprise level global value chain embeddedness on export quality. This article uses the 2000-2011 highly detailed matching data of the customs import and export trade database and the industrial enterprise database,to measure the export quality and the export foreign value-added rate and to further analyze the impacts and mechanisms of the global value chain embeddedness of manufacturing on firm level export quality. It turns out:(l)There is an inverted U-type relationship between Chinese enterprises' GVC embeddedness and corporate export product quality and the relationship between global value chain embeddedness and export quality under different measurement will be affected by exogenous shocks;(2)As Chinese enterprises continue to embed the depth of global value chains, they face"low-end locking, risks from leading enterprises in developed countries. It will also become more and more large;(3)In the process of GVC embeddedness,Chinese enterprises promote the export quality upgrade through the competition effect, but the intermediate product effect and the large market effect fail to improve the export product quality.(4)The impact of GVC embeddedness on export quality is heterogeneous, which depends on the type of GVC embeddedness, firm ownership, trade patterns, industry categories, enterprise technology and geographical distribution of firms. The above conclusions mean that Chinese enterprises can overcome the "low-end locking" risks originating from developed countries only by strengthening their independent research and development capabilities, optimizing the structure of imported intermediate products, and reflecting on the "market-for-technology"strategy;Infrastructure construction and firm ownership reform will also promote the overall improvement of Chinese enterprises1 export quality. The above conclusions mean that enterprises embeddedness in the global value chain can help enterprises to improve productivity and promote enterprises to improve export product quality,to get rid of the"quality depression" of enterprises, and to inject"incentives" into the unfavorable situations in trade. It has important policy implications for the improvement of the quality of the real economy and the effective response of enterprises to external trade frictions.
