| With the development of global economic integration, the Global Value Chains(GVC)have closely linked the production activities of countries around the world, and China has also become one of the countries with the deepest embedded GVC production in the world. Therefore, the research on the influence of global value chain embedding of Chinese manufacture enterprises on the quality upgrading of export products plays an important role in enhancing the international competitiveness of China’s export product quality, implementing the strategy of quality power, and solving the problem of "low-end locking" faced by China’s manufacturing industry. This paper mainly uses literature deductive methods, multivariate statistical analysis methods, theoretical modeling methods and other research methods.Firstly, based on the global value chain theory and the literature research on the quality upgrading of export products, the related mechanisms of the impact of embedded global value chain on the quality of export products are proposed, namely, the effect of import intermediate input, technology spillover effect and competition effect.Based on the merged data of the China Customs Trade Statistics and the China Annual Surveys of Industrial Firms from 2000 to 2006,we establish the benchmark regression model for empirical analysis by using the GVC embedding degree calculated by the method of Upward(2013),the quality of the export product calculated by the post-reverse method of the demand function. The robustness of the measurement model and the impact mechanism of GVC embedding on the quality of export products are also analyzed. The main conclusions are as follows: First, the participation of enterprises in the production of global value chains can effectively improve the quality of export products. However, the impact of GVC embedding on the quality of export products has a nonlinear inverted U-type relationship, that is,the appropriate increase in the degree of GVC embedding will promote the upgrading of export products, but excessive Embedding will inhibit the quality upgrade of export products, and there is a critical value for the impact of GVC embedding on the quality of export products(0.369 in this paper).Second, the reasons why enterprises participate in the impact of global value chain production on the quality of export products are inversely U-shaped,which is closely related to the three effects that affect the quality of export products:(1)Imported intermediate inputs effect. The enterprises can obtain higher quality and larger intermediate inputs via participating in global value chains, which promote the upgrading of export products quality directly;(2)Technology spillover effect.Importing high quality intermediate inputs can bring foreign high-tech spillovers, and foreign high technology Horizontal spillover can promote the improvement of the technical level of local enterprises to a certain extent, which will improve the quality of export products. However, enterprises participating in global value chain production may also inhibit the positive impact of the quality upgrade of export products due to the inability to effectively absorb the technological spillover effects of imported intermediate inputs;(3)Competitive effect. In the face of market competition, enterprises will actively promote their independent innovation capabilities and produce high-quality export products to maintain their competitiveness. However,in the process of upgrading independent innovation capability, enterprises in developing countries often face the “capture effect” of developed countries which restrain the development of their independent innovation capability. The independent innovation capability has a positive impetus to the improvement of export product quality.Third, the impact of the embedded global value chain on the quality of export products will be different due to the trade characteristics of the company, the ownership of the enterprise, the region where the enterprise is located, and the heterogeneity of the industry in which the enterprise is located. Finally, based on the above research conclusions, this paper puts forward some corresponding policies and suggestions for the quality upgrade of export products embedded in global value chains. |
