With the increasing attention on developing managerial coaching in organizations in China,reliable and valid tools to measure managerial coaching for Chinese managers is indispensable.The purpose of this study is to develop a reliable and effective scale on Managerial Coaching for Chinese managers,and to explore the current status and characteristics of managerial coaching in China by using this scale as a measurement tool.By reviewing and analyzing the existing literature,interviewing relevant personnel,consulting experts,the preliminary scale was built.After that,a pilot survey within 51 Chinese managers and a formal survey within 332 Chinese managers were launched.Then statistical analysis tools including item analysis and factor analysis were used to examine the reliability and validity of the scale.The formal scale was formed based on the results of statistical analysis.Finally,the author study the current status and characteristics managerial coaching in China.The study findings are as follows:(1)The scale on managerial coaching for Chinese managers was developed with eight dimensions which are developing people,empowerment,enlightening people,accountability,matching tasks with people,inspiring people by vision,support and sharing,and effective feedback.The study revealed that the scale has good reliability and validity.(2)Managerial coaching has no significant difference among managers with different gender,age,educational background,organizational type and position level.(3)Managers' age is negatively correlated with their managerial coaching.(4)The number of direct reports has a significant impact on managerial coaching,and managers with more than five direct reports has better performance in managerial coaching.(5)Managers with coaching experience or coaching training experience show stronger managerial coaching.(6)Managers' emotional intelligence and Big Five traits of personality are positively correlated with their managerial coaching.
