As the second largest crop, vegetables are an important source of income for farmers. As cash crop, vegetables have the characteristics of short production cycle, high economic benefit, high commodity rate and frequent transactions compared with corn, wheat and other food crops. These characteristics make vegetable growers(Vegetable farmer for short)more closely related to the market. However, the rising transaction cost in recent years has hindered the farmers' deep participation in the market, reduced the economic benefits of the vegetable farmers, and led to the mismatch of supply and demand and the imbalance of interests in the vegetable market, which makes the contradiction between the vegetable farmers and the market increasingly prominent. Therefore, reducing the transaction cost of vegetables and improving the ability of vegetable farmers to participate in the market have become the key to solve the contradiction between small farmers and large markets. However, there are different modes of vegetable farmers' participation in the market, and different transaction modes determine different transaction costs. At the same time, transaction costs affect the choice of vegetable farmers' Trading modes. Therefore,it is of great practical significance to study the vegetable grower transaction model and its transaction cost to improve the participation of vegetable farmers in the market and to increase the income of vegetable farmers.Based on the theory of transaction cost and farmer's economic behavior, this paper takes the survey data of 860 vegetable farmers in Shouguang City,Shandong Province as the research support, analyzes the vegetable trade pattern and characteristics of the vegetable farmers, measures and compares the transaction costs under different vegetable trading modes, and A multi-logit model was used to explore the mechanism of the impact of transaction costs on the vegetable trade pattern selection of vegetable farmers. The following research conclusions were drawn:(1)The “farmer + cooperative” mode is the most ideal vegetable trading mode.Choosing the “farmer + cooperative” trading mode can reduce the information search costs, negotiation costs and supervision costs of the farmers. However, the operating mechanisms of many cooperatives are not perfect at present, and there are problems such as chaotic management and low service enthusiasm.(2)The “farmer + enterprise” mode is an ideal mode for vegetable transactions. On the one hand, this mode is conducive to solving the problem of supply and demand mismatch in the vegetable market, and alleviating the contradiction between vegetable “small farmers” and “big market”.On the other hand,it can reduce the information search costs and negotiation costs of vegetable farmers. However, under the joint interest mechanism of vegetable farmers and enterprises, vegetable farmers will passively assume the business risks of enterprises.(3)Transaction costs have an important impact on the choice of vegetable farmers' trading modes. The price volatility of information search costs, the difficulty of finding suitable buyers, the response to market price fairness in negotiation costs, the number of buyers available in transactions, and the supervision of implementation costs in the market grading and quality standards of vegetable farmers The recognition,as well as the distance from the planting site to the sales market, will have an impact on the choice of vegetable farmers' trading mode.Based on the above research conclusions, this paper proposes the following policy recommendations: Strengthen the construction of local information service platforms, improve their information service capabilities;Establish a quality inspection system for vegetable markets, create a fair trading environment;Accelerate the establishment of local cold chain logistics system, extend vegetable fresh-keeping period;increase policy support for vegetable farmers, promote large-scale and specialized operations;standardize cooperative operating mechanism, guide vegetable farmers to actively join cooperative organizations;Support vegetable processing enterprises and promote the healthy development of the “farmers + enterprises” model.
