With the continuous improvement of the overall level of agricultural production in China,China has become the country with the largest fertilizer production and application amount in the world. In 2021,the amount of chemical fertilizer applied in China reached 51.913 million tons, far exceeding the internationally recognized upper limit of safe application. On the one hand, the application of chemical fertilizer can improve the yield and quality of crops, promote the development of China’s vegetable industry, and on the other hand,it has brought huge economic benefits to vegetable farmers. However, the harm caused by the excessive application of chemical fertilizers cannot be ignored.Farmers pursue excessive fertilization for the yield, and the utilization rate of chemical fertilizer is low,and the fertilization structure is unreasonable. These problems lead to soil hardening, acidification, decreased soil fertility and decreased quality of agricultural products, resulting in adverse effects such as water eutrophication, greenhouse effect and ozone depletion. Therefore, although overfertilization increases farmers’ income in the short term,it inevitably poses a threat to soil, water and food security in the long term. This study first sorts out the domestic and foreign literature, defines the concept of fertilizer and fertilizer application reduction, and expounds the externality theory, farmer behavior theory and sustainable development theory,so as to provide the theoretical basis for the following research.Secondly, the natural environment, social economy, vegetable planting and chemical fertilizer application reduction in the research area are analyzed objectively.Thirdly, the author used the questionnaire survey method to conduct field research on vegetable farmers in Huarong County,Xiangyin and Yueyang County,Yueyang City,to understand their fertilizer application and willingness to reduce fertilizer application in the process of vegetable planting in 2021.After that, the research data are summarized and sorted out,Master factor extraction by factor analysis,The extracted principal factor was replaced into a binary Logistic regression model,Based on the regression analysis of the influencing factors of fertilizer reduction in farmers,And then to observe the more significant impact factors,It is concluded that the household management characteristics of vegetable growers are significant at the 5%level,In this feature, the factor load value of the total vegetable land area is the largest and the regression coefficient is positive;Fertilizer cognitive characteristics were significant at the 1%level,Among them, the understanding degree factor of soil testing and formula fertilization technology has the largest load value and the coefficient is positive;Characteristics of growers participating in socialized services were significant at the 5%level,Among them, the willingness of joining farmers’ professional cooperation has the greatest influence and the coefficient is positive;Overfertilization cognitive traits were significant at the 5%level,Among them, the understanding degree of the consequences of excessive fertilization has the greatest influence and the coefficient is positive;Individual grower characteristics were significant at the 1%level,The age factor has the largest load value and the coefficient is negative; The cognitive characteristics of chemical fertilizer and the external environment characteristics had no significant influence. Therefore,in order to guide vegetable growers to reduce chemical fertilizer, the following measures are proposed:developing moderate scale operation;promoting the technology of soil testing and formula fertilization, developing farmers’professional cooperatives, cultivating their awareness of environmental protection, and establishing ecological compensation mechanism...
