East Asia is one of the fastest growing regions in the 21st century.Countries with a central position in the East Asian trade network can obtain social capital and exert international economic influence.Since the last century Japan has been at the center of the East Asian trade network, its positioning is of great importance:maintaining rapid economic growth within East Asia and enhancing Japans trade competitiveness. On the basis of prior research, which have typically applied the social network theory, this paper will apply the complex network method to investigate Japans positioning and influence in the East Asian trade network.Historically Japan has been the most important country in the network but has seen a gradual decline in trade flow and competitiveness in the past decade. This research combines factor analysis and statistical regression to empirically test the relationship between labor quality, market size, exchange rate stability and Japan's position in the goods trade network. The results prove that labor force quality, market size and exchange rate stability are positively related to Japan5 s position in the East Asian goods trade network.Improving the quality of Japan,s labor force, maintaining the stability of the Japanese yen's exchange rate, and expanding the size of Japan9 s import and export market are all conducive to maintaining Japan's strong trade position and Competitiveness. In response to the gradual decline of Japan's East Asian goods trade network, three improvement paths were pointed out:optimizing the quality structure of Japan's labor force, maintaining a stable exchange rate policy, and increasing the level of trade facilitation to expand the scale of the Japanese trade market.
