A Study Of The Operational Challenges & Solutions In The Information Technology Department Of Company X

From the time computer systems and internet-based companies started providing services,technology has advanced rapidly to today where networked computers and complex information systems are ubiquitous.Though operations management(OM)was not a new concept,this developed into a new area of study and came to be known as Information Technology Operations(IT Ops).As organizations have grown over the years,their IT department and its operational efficiency has increasingly become a factor to contribute towards company's growth and expansion.IT Ops today encompasses several fields within itself.The IT department of an organization is responsible for the smooth functioning and coordination of the different services.However,with the ever-growing business,interdependencies and complexities involved,IT Ops often becomes a war zone in most of the companies today and many companies struggle to optimize their IT operations.In this study,the researcher chose to study the existing challenges in IT Ops in Company X and attempted to find out the factors impacting the operational performance of its IT department.In recent years the IT department at this company was marred with some inefficiencies which caused a damage to its brand image as well as increased cost of IT projects due to delays.Since company's major IT initiatives are undertaken in Bangalore,the researcher chose to do a quantitative research based on the responses he got after surveying the employees in the Bangalore office.The purpose of the research was to investigate the major factors impacting the overall performance of the IT department in company.Interestingly,contrary to the initial view of many employees,headcount and communication skills did not emerge as the main factors impacting the performance.The statistical analysis showed automation,skill upgrade and use of artificial intelligence as main drivers of performance enhancement at the IT department in Company X.The overall conclusion,the challenges faced during the research and directions for further research are discussed in the last chapter.Considering that the fourth of industrial revolution is driven by IT,the solutions presented at the end of the research can serve as a generic guideline for many other companies as well to study and customize it as per their needs and organizational structures.The result establishes the statistical significance of the different variables,which explains that the IT Ops in Company X can enhance its performance if the variables are focused upon as mentioned in the implementation plan in detail.
