With the development of economic globalization and the increasing pressure of market competition and cost, more and more companies have entered the international market to seek opportunities and capabilities that can bring innovation advantages. After the internationalization of production, sales, and other links, overseas R&D has become a new choice for multinational companies, and the R&D area has developed from a single country to one or more countries(regions)overseas.Enterprises conducting overseas R&D activities on the one hand transfer the unique advanced technology of the parent company to overseas. On the other hand, the geographically dispersed overseas R&D locations enable subsidiaries to understand and learn advanced technology knowledge from multiple host countries, and develop innovative products for local and global customers by utilizing competitive resources and combining the market environment and demand of host countries;at the same time, subsidiaries can also transfer knowledge back to the parent company to improve their innovation performance. As emerging economies such as China continue to deploy overseas R&D,more and more scholars have put the research background of overseas R&D in China, but there is less research on the geographical distribution of overseas R&D of Chinese enterprises.Based on the data from Chinese public firms in High-Tech industry from 2008 to 2017,this thesis investigates the relationship between the depth and breadth of overseas R&D and parent company innovation performance, and the moderating role of absorptive capacity and host country institutional environment. We found that the relationship between the depth of overseas R&D and parent company innovation performance is inverted U-shaped;the relationship between the breadth of overseas R&D and parent company innovation performance is U-shaped;absorptive capacity positively moderate the relationship between the depth and breadth of overseas R&D and parent company innovation performance;host country institutional environment negatively regulate the relationship between the depth of overseas R&D and parent company innovation performance. In the last part of this thesis,we put forward some suggestions for overseas R&D institutions and provide perspectives for further research, this study has practical implications for Chinese enterprises' R&D internationalization. The contributions and shortcomings of this study: In the existing literature, the researches on overseas R&D and corporate innovation performance are mainly considered from a single dimension, and the research objects are mainly enterprises in developed countries.Taking Chinese High-Tech enterprises as samples, this paper studies the joint effects of the depth and breadth of overseas R&D on the parent company innovation performance, and supplements the research on overseas R&D and innovation performance by taking the absorptive capacity and host country institutional environment as adjustment variables. However, the research object of this paper is limited to specific industry, and the theoretical analysis is mainly based on the research of companies in traditional developed countries and emerging economies, moreover, the network structure of Chinese overseas R&D host countries is relatively simple at the present stage,so there are still directions for further research.
