The impact of price support policies on Chinese food production has always been the focus of government and scholars. The minimum purchase price policy and temporary storage policy have been the main components of China’s food price policy system since the 2004 food market reform, which has promoted unprecedented development of comprehensive food productivity. In 2016,the government cancelled the corn and soybean price support policy and changed it to the producer subsidy system features— "market pricing and price-separation." The temporary stockpiling policy officially withdrew from the grain price support system in China, which also kicked off a new round of grain price reform in China. In this context, evaluating the effect of price support policies from the perspective of the sown area vary of food crops, and reviewing the effects and mechanisms of the previous round of food price policies, help to summarize experience and lessons from the setbacks experienced. It is of great significance to explore food price support policies that conform to the laws of the market economy. This article firstly sorts out the evolution of Chinese grain price policy since the reform and opening up,and analysis the changes of grain crop sown area and spatial response under the intervention of price support policies based on 1998-2018 provincial panel data;secondly, based on supply and demand theory and agricultural product supply theory, figured out the impact mechanism of price support policies on the planting area change of China’s main food crops;from the data of four food crops including rice, wheat, corn, and soybean, and the difference-in-differences model was used to estimate the average policy effect and dynamic policy effect of the price support policies on planting area changes of main grain crop in China, and further compared the difference of the impacts for price support policies on different food crops. Finally, the main conclusions of this article were drawn, and policy recommendations as well. The results show that the price support policies have a different degree of promoting the increase in the planted area of rice, wheat, and corn.It is wheat> maize> rice;but the price support policy has little effect on soybean’s planting area.Second, the support effect of price support policies on the sown area of rice, wheat, and soybeans has a sustained effect, that is,the longer the price support policy lasts, the greater the effect is on the increase of sown area of food crops, but the efficiency of different food crop price support policies is different, and the size is corn> wheat> rice.Grain price support policy reforms need to pay attention to distinguishing the differences between the impact of the original price support policy on the planting area of different food crops to avoid food production shocks caused by policy adjustments;the government needs to rationally use the laws of dynamic changes in policy effects, further improve policy design under the laws of the market, and deepen the reform of the grain market.
