The careers of scientific researchers have gradually been shortened. Those researchers who have been engaged in scientific research for a long time and have been active all the time are extremely precious.Taking scholars with relatively long career as research objects, exploring their academic performance at different stages of their career can provide certain reference for further research on the growth law of scientists. At the same time, the study shows that the counting method greatly influence the academic performance of researchers. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact of the counting method on the academic performance of scholars with longer careers. In this study, scholars who have been active for 30 years or more in the field of virology and geology were selected for this study, and their careers were divided into 5 stages according to 6 years.Using four typical counting methods(full counting, fractional counting, first author counting, and corresponding author counting method)to calculate the productivity index(number of papers)and influence index(total citations, citations per paper)of scientific researchers at each stage.Firstly draw the productivity and academic influence change curves of different stages of the researcher's career, and explain the practical significance of the productivity and academic influence change curves obtained by each counting method through combining the cumulative advantage theory, utility maximization theory and obsolescence theory. On this basis, influential virology and geology scholars are selected for case analysis to enhance the persuasiveness of the research.Next the Person correlation is then used to analyze the correlation between productivity index and influence index obtained by different counting methods. Then use paired sample T test to statistically test the difference between the productivity(influence)indicators obtained by different counting methods, and combine the characteristics of the discipline and the nature of the counting method to explain the differences in the productivity(academic influence)curves obtained by different counting methods. Finally, based on the impact of counting methods on the academic performance of scientific researchers and combining the characteristics of academic performance in different stages of the careers of scientific researchers,it provides enlightening suggestions on how to choose a reasonable counting method in the evaluation of talents in order to select scientific researchers more scientifically. This research found that scholars in the fields of virology and geology based on full counting method have a trend of increasing the amount of publications, which has stabilized after reaching a peak. The variation range of the productivity curve obtained by other counting methods is relatively small. The curve of total citation times obtained by scholars in the field of virology and geology based on the full counting method presents an inverted "U" shape, indicating that the total citation times may reach peak and then decline during the promotion process of scientific researchers, which conforms to the theory of utility maximization. The variation trend of total citation times obtained by other counting methods is not obvious.According to the Person correlation analysis, there is a strong positive correlation between the number of papers and the total citation times, which indicates that the increase of the number of papers can promote the increase of the total citation times, while there is almost no correlation between the number of papers and the citations per paper, which shows that citations per paper are less dependent on the number of papers. The analysis results of paired sample T test show that the counting method greatly influence the academic performance of researchers in the field of virology, while the counting method has a relatively small impact on the academic performance of researchers in the field of geology. This shows that the influence of counting methods on academic performance of scholars with longer careers is rely on specific filed.According to the research results of this paper, four policy suggestions are proposed for the talent evaluation of universities or scientific research institutions.First, when the assessment cycle is formulated, the talent growth rules of specific disciplines should be combined to stimulate more potential of scientific researchers.Secondly,we should create favorable conditions for them at the institutional level and stimulate the researchers' academic stamina.Third, encourage researchers to carry out valuable and meaningful cooperation to ensure the quality of research results.Fourthly, according to the purpose of evaluation, the appropriate counting method should be selected carefully.
