Trade Policy Uncertainty And Quality Upgrade Of Export Products

In recent years,events such as Britain 's “Brexit” and Trump 's election as the US President bring a wave of “anti-globalization”,and the economic and political uncertainty increases.Moreover,due to the slowdown of China's economic growth,how to realize the transformation and upgrading of economic development in such a high uncertainty environment becomes a topic of great concern.Based on existing literature,this paper studies the impact of trade policy uncertainty on the quality upgrade of Chinese export products by applying Chinese custom database,Chinese industrial enterprises database,and WTO Tariff download facility database from 2000 to 2007.It is found that during the sample period.the export quality of Chinese firms was upgraded,which is mainly achieved by improving the quality of continuous export products,entering the export market of high-quality products,and exiting the export market of low-quality products.Meanwhile,the increase of trade policy uncertainty hinders the quality upgrade of export products.The quality upgrade of differentiated products and core products is less affected by the trade policy uncertainty.Products which exported through a general trade mode,and non-state-own firms are higher affected by the trade policy uncertainty.After considering the intra-firm product relevance and regional institution quality,this paper further finds that an increase in the product relevant of firms and regional institution quality are conducive to reducing the negative impact of trade policy uncertainty.According to the results found in the results,this paper puts forward implications which may be beneficial for promoting the quality upgrade of Chinese exporters.
