Abstract/Summary:
The municipality of Mayaguez, located in the Western Area of Puerto Rico, has a population of approximately 100,000 inhabitants. The city is a major hub for educational services and economic development in the western area creating a high density of traffic flow. The Mayaguez urbanized area has a high density of signalized intersections that combined with the high number of access points create a system with excess delays for their users (Valdes D, et al, 2007).;Mayaguez and the Western Area will be the hosts of the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games. In preparation for the games the city is developing infrastructure projects such as new stadiums and other sport facilities and housing developments. The sports facilities will depend of satellite parking areas complemented with a system of trolleys to transport the visitors to the facilities. The celebration of these games in Mayaguez will generate an increment in traffic flow and tourism in the city. Therefore it is important to apply up-to-date traffic control strategies to manage the traffic and provide information for the visitors.;This project introduces the use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) as an alternative for controlling traffic operations in Mayaguez, with the development of a Traffic Management Center (TMC) and the implementation of ITS strategies, such as advanced signal controls, dynamic message signs and traffic cameras, among others. The TMC would acquire real time traffic information to maximize the capacity of the network, reduce travel delays and provide the users with real time information, which they can use to make informed choices of travel. This project presents the develop of the ITS architecture for Mayaguez based in the National ITS Architecture (NITSA) as part of the FHWA requirement for the development of ITS project.
