Abstract/Summary:
The fuel consumption and heat transfer efficiency of a rotary lime kiln is related to amount of heat transferred to the lime mud by the chain system. This research aims at providing a better understanding of heat transfer within lime kilns, by modeling heat transfer phenomena that occurs within the chain system. An unsteady, one-dimensional heat conduction model has been developed to describe the temperature profile of a single chain ring. Due to the absence of lime mud heat transfer coefficients in literature, an experiment was devised to obtain these values. The heat transfer model was applied to the entire chain section of a lime kiln to obtain temperature profiles of the combustion gas, lime mud, and wall. The unsteady temperature profile of a single chain was validated experimentally, using a kiln mock-up. It was found through sensitivity analysis that a shorter, denser chain system was favorable. This model can be used as analytical tool for the design of chain systems.
