Abstract/Summary:
The deterioration of flexible pavements due to low-temperature cracking is a significant and costly problem in areas of the United States and Canada exposed to low-temperatures over an extended period of time. The creation of the SUPERPAVE(TM) performance grade binder specification and mix designs was the first step in combating the problem of low-temperature cracking. Unfortunately, pavements created using this specification still exhibited poor performance in cold climate areas over time.;The asphalt binder plays a key role in helping to mitigate low-temperature cracking of pavement. A hard binder is more prone to cracking in low-temperatures than a soft binder. To create an asphalt binder that has improved low-temperature performance, modifiers such as polymers or rubber are added.;This project looks into the effects of a Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) polymer (Kraton grade D1133K) on the low-temperature performance of an asphalt binder. Tests were performed on the unmodified and modified binder in accordance to the "SUPERPAVE(TM) Performance Grade Binder Specification." The Bending Beam Rheometer was used to evaluate the low-temperature properties of the modified and unmodified asphalt binder.;The results obtained are inconclusive to see the effect SBS-polymer modification had on the low-temperature performance of the unmodified asphalt binder. It was not realized in the beginning of this project that the Cooper Union Asphalt Technology Laboratory did not have the proper test equipment to investigate the effects polymer modification has on the low-temperature performance an asphalt binder. Tests can be rerun once the proper equipment is obtained and tested using the new SUPERPAVE(TM) specifications.
