Abstract/Summary:
Springs are one of the most important components used in mechanical devices. In this study, two springs, a frictional ring spring and a helical coil spring are modified to improve their characteristics and expand their field of application.;The frictional ring springs are modified by introducing a rubber layer between the two interacting taper surfaces to completely eliminate friction and reduce the damping due to friction. Several tests and analytical studies have been conducted. It was found that the intermediate rubber layer eliminated friction completely and reduced the damping of the springs, while still retaining effective material utilization of the ring springs.;For helical coil springs, the direction of loading was changed from the axial direction to transverse direction. The stiffness of these springs in the transverse direction is very high and they exhibit good amount of damping too. The tests were supported with analytical calculations. A finite element analysis was also done to study the stress distribution in this type of loading.
