| This paper explores the image of the female journalist in popular culture through Danielle Steel's romance novels. Steel is a best-selling American author who has written eight books featuring female journalists as her main protagonists. This paper will examine eight of Steel's characters in the novels: Bittersweet, Changes, Heartbeat, Journey, Message From Nam, No Greater Love, Passion's Promise, and Second Chance. No previous research has looked at the effects that romance novels have had on the image of the female journalist in popular culture. This study compares and contrasts Steel's journalists with other female journalists in popular culture in order to show their differences and similarities. Research has been conducted to show what drives the public (mostly women) to read romance novels such as Steel's, and why they are continuing to grow in popularity. With the success Steel has had with these eight best-selling romance novels, the time has come to take a closer look at the images of the female journalists that Steel has created. |
