Abstract/Summary:
Boys' love (BL) manga is a genre written by women, for women, focusing on male homosexual relationships. This thesis aims to expand understanding of the genre and to correct misunderstandings of the genre which have been perpetuated by some of the earlier academic work on the genre. This thesis examines the basic structure of the BL genre, and its appeal to readers. In addition, it provides an analysis of the three modes of storytelling in the genre. This thesis also examines online English language fan reactions to female characters in BL and theorizes the causes of these reactions. Furthermore, it provides an examination of the way that translation from one language to another and from one medium to another affects the way the story is received.
