Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to design and implement a method of integrating composition into an eighth grade orchestra curriculum that would not negatively affect instrumental skill due to the resulting reduced rehearsal time. In groups of 2 to 3, students composed an original theme and 1 to 3 variations, utilizing upper positions. Students described how each variation achieved unity and variety with the theme. Data in the form of field notes, student compositions, student reflections, assessment rubrics, and video recordings showed that students had positive attitudes about working in groups resulting in an increase in excitement levels during orchestra class. While the project helped some students improve shifting skills, the time taken away from rehearsal may have had a negative impact on the orchestra's overall sound.
