This thesis is a case study of Bread & Roses Housing, Inc., a community land trust (CLT) in a predominately Latino community in New England. The purpose of a CLT is to hold land for the benefit of the community while offering affordable and secure access to residents. Bread & Roses Housing is a relatively small community land trust located in Lawrence, Massachusetts whose mission is to provide homeownership opportunities to families traditionally excluded from the housing market. Using Bread & Roses Housing as a case study, the impact of the CLT model is examined as well as the issues and challenges of its implementation. This analysis explores how the current housing crisis presents a need to revisit the dominant paradigm of homeownership, and finally, what opportunities and challenges may lay ahead for community land trusts. |
