Adamant support for a market economy has long been a staple of public culture in the United States. Nowhere else in the world do citizens rigidly adhere to the underlying values of capitalism: liberty, self-interest, and individualism. However, beneath these values rests a profound moral sense, one based on the predominant Judeo-Christian ethics of altruism. Because of this, Americans are willing to support a market economy insofar as they perceive the outcome to be moral, that is, capitalism must serve the good of all. |
