Abstract/Summary:
Geographic knowledge and geographic perception is a vital skill that the majority of Americans are deficient in. The purpose of this study is to analyze these skills in young American college students age 18-25. A survey conducted by myself will focus on the Middle East and North Africa region, and use survey methods previously used by the National Geographic Society, Roper, and the International Geographic Union to test respondents distance perception skills and basic geographic knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa regions.;The results from this study will identify characteristics of a more spatially perceptive and geographically knowledgeable individual. It will also provide recommendations on how to continue to identify these important characteristics, but provide recommendations on how to build these skills at a young age through an evolved geographic education curriculum in pre-schools, K-12, and universities.
