Abstract/Summary:
The thesis analyzes the Economics of Defence in Uruguay, showing the evolution of the defence expenditure in the past 40 years and analyzing the present impact of military expenses in Uruguay on public health, national economy, as well as on public accounts. The Uruguayan Ministry of Defence provides employment for almost 1% of the total population of the country and for almost 2.5% of the country's labour force. Furthermore, it concentrates 13.5% of the civil service and provides integral health cover to almost 5% of the total population of the country.;An econometric analysis verifies that the defence expenditures of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay do not show any signs of correlation. This is indisputable proof of the good relationship that Uruguay maintains with its two powerful neighbours. As well, it shows the excellent relationship that exists between Argentina and Brazil, two of the major economic and military powers of South America.;A small country like Uruguay, with slightly more than 3 million inhabitants, is currently the 8th major troop supplier to the UN. Nevertheless, the important Uruguayan participation in peace operations has not increased military expenditure and it has not become a burden for the country, as it has not impacted negatively on the Uruguayan economy. Furthermore, participating in peace missions has generated positive political, economic and social implications for Uruguay.;This thesis includes a descriptive analysis of how the Defence sector in Uruguay is currently managed, from a strictly managerial point of view. Also, it describes the current situation of the Defence reform initiated in 2005, by the Uruguayan government, which is still being conducted.;An English version of Chapter 1 (Introduction) and Chapter 6 (Conclusions) is presented at the end of the thesis. As well, an previous and summarized version of Chapter 3 (Economic Aspects of Defence in Uruguay) and Chapter 4 (Economic and Social Impact of Participating in Peace Missions) was published as a single article. This article entitled "Country Survey XX: Defence Spending and Peacekeeping in Uruguay", was published in the journal Defence and Peace Economics, Vol. 18, Issue 3, 2007, pp. 281-302.
