Social workers' perceptions of immigrant families in the child welfare system

Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of social workers regarding immigrant families in the child welfare system. Sixteen Los Angeles County Children's Social Workers' participated in cross-sectional, qualitative interviews. This study examines the social workers' experiences with immigrant families; trainings and policies for practice with immigrant families, and service delivery to immigrant families. In addition to identifying needs and challenges of immigrant families, this study found strengths that are unique to immigrant families. Findings indicated that some of the needs of immigrant families include counseling; parenting; medical services; educational services; employment services; financial assistance; housing, and transportation. This study also found that there is a need for trainings on working with immigrant families. Further research is suggested.
