Abstract/Summary:
The problem. This study investigated whether there were statistically significant differences in perceptions of high school students with specific learning disabilities with respect to reasons for either remaining in high school or leaving high school on their 18th birthday.;Method. A quasi-experimental study was conducted. 30 students who were enrolled in a comprehensive high school and 30 students who were enrolled in TRACE and HSDP were administered a survey. The survey contained 20 factors for students to rate the importance of the factors affecting the students' decision to remain in school or to leave school on their 18 th birthday. The survey used a four-point Likert scale.;Results. The first hypothesis, which predicted a significant difference on survey scores between high school students and TRACE students in their perceptions of factors influencing them to leave or remain in a comprehensive high school, was supported. An analysis of the data revealed a significant difference (t=3.991, p <.000, d/f=62) between the two groups. The second hypothesis, which predicted a significant difference on survey scores in perceptions about support from school personnel between high school students and TRACE students, was not supported. An analysis of the data did not reveal a significant difference (t=.638, p <.526, d/f=63). The third hypothesis, which predicted a significant difference on survey scores in student input of their IEP, services, and supports (self-determination) between high school students and TRACE students, was supported. This factor was scored more negatively for TRACE students. An analysis of the data revealed a significant difference (t=2.785, p <.007, d/f=63).
