Abstract/Summary:
This study consists of a historical account of citizenship education in America from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present and collaborative art in an attempt to determine if and in what ways these relationships are reciprocal. Consideration is given to the concept of citizenship education in general, but especially as related to contexts in which one seeks to apply those strategies to the art classroom.;The purpose of this study is to explore the nature of collaborative art to provide a foundation for establishing connections between collaborative art and citizenship education initiatives. Implications are suggested for incorporating citizenship education in the art classroom through collaborative art practices. This study advocates for art education in general by detailing the ways in which it supports the goals of citizenship education.
