Abstract/Summary:
In this Inquiry Project, the examination of the presence of moral development takes place among athletes participating in Middle School Varsity sports. With specific attention paid to sportsmanship and ethics, the first chapter describes the need for moral development among today's youth. A look into the history of research on this topic, arguments for and against youth participation, as well as current trends and ways of thinking can be found in Chapter Two. Through observations, interviews, and surveys of those involved in Middle School sports, Chapter Three and Four describe the inquiry process and the results of this inquiry. Descriptions of individual athletes and experiences, both positive and negative, are located in these two chapters. The final chapter summarizes the significance of these findings in the role that sports play in the lives of youth.
