Abstract/Summary:
The growth and development of non-profit agencies and their ability to carry on their mission is paramount in helping meet the needs of those they serve. Historically, in particular during the Settlement House Movement of the early 20th century, human service agencies were an assortment of individuals who banded together to make change by providing services in the neighborhoods that were most disenfranchised. Today, human service agencies in order to sustain themselves receive large portions of their monies from Federal or State agencies thus creating a burdening bureaucracy that can detract from the mission. A study of the balance of the need for bureaucracy and its implacable propensity for rigidness is explored. Also examined is how small entrepreneurial agencies have been designed to take the most essential elements of bureaucracy and develop sustainable organizations that are creatively meeting the needs of those they serve.
