Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is the culmination of a generation plant protection analysis facilitated in order to explore an upgrade from outdated analog mechanical relaying, to an innovative microprocessor based protective relaying scheme. This analysis has been carried out for the Whitney Hydroelectric plant with special emphasis on relay selection and the corresponding settings. This is associated with the analog based protective relaying scheme currently installed at the plant located at 285 CR, Clifton, Texas, sponsored by the Army Corp of Engineers under order number W9126G-04-P-0359. This thesis research project includes data collection, data preparation, system and component modeling, power flow analysis, short circuit analysis for three-phase, single-phase-to-ground, and double-line-to-ground faults, Current Transformer (CT) ratio calculations, CT type and location selections, relay selections, and relay settings. Based on these analyses and the results, the recommendations for relay protection scheme have been provided as a model to be implemented.
