| Reliability of power systems is a major concern for power companies. Power lines operate under different conditions, and occasionally, they require different groups of relays settings. Some new microprocessor relays have the capabilities of saving different groups.; The Apex US#1-Green Level 115 KV line, owned by Progress Energy, operates at 115 KV under normal conditions and at 24 KV in emergencies. The relaying of this line requires the existence of a separate setting group for each operating scenario.; This thesis presents an approach for automatically detecting the operating scenario and switching to the proper relay settings. The thesis applies the detection algorithm to the relays that protect the mentioned line. The algorithm is tested for proper results. This enhances the setting group switchover method; it also reduces distraction, chances for human errors, and improves the protection of the line. |
