Abstract/Summary:
Catalytic activities and natures of M/8YSZ and M/CeO2/8YSZ (M = Ni, Cu, Ag, Co, 8YSZ - 8 mol % yttria) were investigated for the application of the direct oxidizing solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode. This research focused on the behavior of each catalyst against carbon deposition, the primary cause of deactivation on the SOFC anode. The catalytic combustion of methane was performed with various fuel-to-oxygen ratios and temperatures. Cobalt and nickel are active catalysts both for methane oxidation and carbon formation. Copper and silver showed little carbon deactivation; however, they have very poor methane oxidation activity. The correlation between the rate of reaction and the oxygen and methane concentrations were also calculated based on a differential plug flow reactor model.
