In 1563, one year after the Council of Trent released its decree concerning music, Michele Varotto published his Missarum liber primus cum sex vocibus De Beata Virgine. Voycy Le Temps. Venicreator Spiritus. Pro Defunctis. Sancta Trinitas cum octo vocibus. (Venice, 1563). To date, the mass book has not been studied or been transcribed into modern notation. In this thesis, Varotto's Requiem was transcribed into modern notation, edited, and studied, in particular its style and historical context within the Counter Reformation. The results of the transcribed score shed new light on requiem composition in the late sixteenth century. |
