Abstract/Summary:
In my thesis I will bring to the table the debate over whether poetry can be translated without losing its deeper meaning. I will be using the poetry of Cesar Vallejo, Cesar Moro, Blanca Varela and Jorge Pimentel. I will include a brief biography to introduce each author to the reader, and then exhibit each poet's work. I will then explain why I have chosen each poet, and then present his poem and my translation. I will also reference scholars of translation theory, including James Holmes, Roman Jakobson, Guideon Toury, Lawrence Venuti and Suzanne Jill Levine to validate my study. I will also introduce some translation methods of my own. For each author I will demonstrate how the deeper meaning of the poem is not lost through the translation and, in fact, may be enhanced in the words of the target language.
