Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this project was to introduce a mindfulness-based support group designed to serve as a prevention and intervention program for a variety of mental health disorders for adolescents who may not have access to other professional treatment. This project summarized the data concerning psychological risks of U.S. adolescents; it also reviewed the research on the effectiveness of mindfulness-based programs in schools and agencies. This review suggested that a mindfulness-based support group for adolescents would be an effective treatment for those who are interested in learning more about mindfulness and how it supports mental health. A contemplative group was proposed for 8 to 12 students per group; those with more similar symptoms, if any, were recommended to be in the same group. A modified group for those suffering from anxiety and ADHD was also proposed. The purpose of the group is to improve the overall well-being of adolescents.
