Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this project thesis report was to review the literature on eyewitness reliability in police lineups. Event factors, witness characteristics and system variables were evaluated. Social science research and government publications were analyzed. In conclusion, several factors must be evaluated before determining if a witness is reliable. Most importantly, the criminal justice system must ensure that the witness has an unbiased arena in which to give his or her description and attempt to identify the criminal perpetrator. Current trends show that field research, analyzing true life crime and witnesses, may increase the likelihood of determining accurate witnesses from inaccurate witnesses because of its practical application.
