Abstract/Summary:
The literature about children of alcoholics (COA) indicates that living with an alcoholic parent can have negative impact on a child's academic, social, behavioral, and emotional development. In addition, childhood issues related to parental alcoholism could lead to future adult problems (Gravitz & Bowden, 1987). The purpose of this project was to propose support group for COAs in three key areas of need: academics, social development and behavioral issues. The aim of the program is to equip COAs with healthy coping skills while living in their alcoholic home, to uncover strengths and capabilities to be successful academically, as well as provide a safe environment to share and express their feelings and experiences. The group proposed here offers hope to have a significant impact on the COAs to prevent or minimize the harmful consequences of parental alcoholism in their future.
