| What happens when peer tutoring is used in a middle school math classroom? Specifically, what are the effects peer tutoring has academically and socially: Do tutees get individualized instruction they need? Do tutors gain a deeper understanding of the material being taught? Are classroom communities being built? This qualitative inquiry takes place in a math classroom in an inner-city, low socio-economic middle school. It is an environment where family values do not place high importance on getting a proper education and many students are being left behind. The findings show that peer tutoring is not only an efficient and effective way to provide individualized instruction to those in need, but is beneficial both academically and socially to all involved in the process. |
